PauseAI US on Capitol Hill: “The people demand an int’l treaty to Pause AI!”
“The harms of artificial intelligence, which will only keep getting more severe with continued unchecked development, bring together people from all backgrounds, professions, political affiliations, and ways of thinking to demand a common sense solution: don’t make this problem any worse until we know how to control it. As the leader in the AI race, the United States is in a strong position to go to the other nations of the world and negotiate a Pause treaty.”
— Holly Elmore, Executive Director, PauseAI US
Each protestor has their own personal reason to protect our world from dangerous AI. The speakers cover just a fraction of the ways unregulated AI development has threatened the lives and livelihoods of the American people. Charlotte Brock is a veteran who fears warfare too fast and powerful for human judgment to be involved. Heather-Ashley Boyer, an actor and member of SAG-AFTRA who was part of the 2023 strike, wants to protect her digital identity and human artistry in Hollywood. Jack and Cathryn Gardner are music teachers who want to start a family together in a world that is protected from dangerous AI.
63% of Americans support a ban on smarter-than-human AI, and a plurality of both Democrats and Republicans support an international treaty to ban any smarter-than-human AI (YouGov).
Top scientists, industry whistleblowers, and Nobel Prize winners all agree: Superintelligent AI could cause human extinction. If we build smarter-than-human AI without knowing how to control it, it might be the last invention we ever make.
